Son of William and Mary Young of 73 North Jackson St, Coatbridge then 3 George Gray St, Clyde View, Rutherglen. Robert had a brother serving in the Navy. From the 1901 Census - Address - 169d Main St, Coatbridge - William Young aged 38, Elizabeth Young aged 39, Robert's grandmother Elizabeth P Brownlie aged 76, John Young aged 16, William Young aged 13, Elizabeth Young aged 11, James Young aged 6, Robert Young aged 4, Joan Young aged 8 months. Richard's Pension was awarded to his mother and father.

Additional Information

The Battalion were part of the 189th Brigade, 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. The Division took part in the Battle of Albert, 21st - 23rd August 1918. This was part of the 2nd Battles of the Somme, 21st August - 3rd September 1918 : British Third and Fourth Armies commence offensive operations on the same ground over which the 1916 Battle of the Somme was fought. They make deep advance. Robert's record states - Enlisted 13/04/1915. Draft for MEF 09/09/1915. Joined "Drake" Battalion 21/09/1915 till 22/10/1915. Re-joined "Drake" Battalion after 2 months in Hospital with Diarrhoea. 22/12/1915 till 20/04/1916 to Kasro for duty. Joined base depot at Mudros 31/05/1916. Re-joined "Drake" Battalion 13/06/1916 till 22/10/1916. Invalided to UK 27/10/1916 with Bronchitis. Draft for BEF 15/04/1917. Joined "Drake" Battalion 10/05/1917 till 12/08/1917. Invalided to UK 06/09/1917 with Colitis.20/5/18 28 days detention for absence 10-17/5/18 ; Released from detention (17 days unexpired portion of sentence remitted) for draft for BEF 1/6/18. Joined "Drake" Battalion 15/06/1918. Robert is also remembered on the Stewarts and Lloyds Roll of Honour (see photos).
