Alexander Thomson

The Battalion were part of the 1st Brigade, Royal Naval Division. Alexander died of enteric fever and acute inflammation of the tonsils at 5.45 a.m. aboard the Hospital Ship "Formusa". Alexander trained for several months before sailing for the Dardanelles on the 01/08/1915. Alexander joined the "Hood" Battalion on the 20/08/1915 and had only recently sent a letter home telling of his first experience in the firing line. Alexander died 33 days after joining the Battalion. Port Said, at the northern outlet of the Suez Canal, was an important hospital centre during the First World War. From May-November 1915, it received wounded from Gallipoli and later from operations in Egypt and Palestine. See Directory for Alexander's brother John's page.
