Samuel Smith

The Battalion were in Ghorpuri Barracks, Poona, India in August 1914. On the 14/10/1914 they departed on troop ship "Saturnia", landing at Devonport on the 16th November. The Battalion arrived at Le Havre on the 20/12/1914 and were part of the 81st Brigade, 27th Division. Samuel arrived in France on the 23/03/1915. He was Killed in Action 2 weeks later. The Division was the only one involved in the action of St. Eloi, 14th - 15th March 1915. The Division were preparing for action at the Battles of Ypres (Second Ypres), 22nd April - 25th May 1915 when Samuel fell. The Division took part in all the Battles here - the Battle of Grafenstafel, 22nd - 23rd April 1915, the Battle of St. Julien, 24th April - 4th May 1915, the Battle of Frezenberg, 8th - 13th May 1915, the Battle of Bellewaarde, 24th - 25th May 1915, Ypres (now Ieper) is a town in the Province of West Flanders. The Memorial is situated at the eastern side of the town on the road to Menin (Menen) and Courtrai (Kortrijk). Each night at 8 pm the traffic is stopped at the Menin Gate while buglers of the Last Post Association sound the Last Post in the roadway under the Memorial's arches. The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. Samuel is also remembered on the Maxwell Parish Church and East United Free Churches Rolls of Honour and at the Family Plot in New Monkland Cemetery (see photos).
