From the 1901 Census - Address - 47 Golfdrum St, Dunfermline, Fife - George Smith aged 37, Janet Smith aged 36, Robert Smith aged 7, Georgina Smith aged 5, Albert Smith aged 3 months. Robert's Pension was awarded to his mother Janet on the 05/04/1918.

Additional Information

The Battalion were part of the 2nd Royal Naval Brigade, 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. Robert was assumed Killed in Action on the 03/02/1917 during the capture of Puisieux Trench by the Division. This was part of the Operations on the Ancre, 11th January - 13th March 1917 : The Final flickering of the 1916 Somme offensive as British seek localised tactical advantage on heights above valley of the River Ancre. Robert enlisted on the 06/04/1915, Draft for the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on the 01/08/1915, Joined the "Hawke" Battalion on the 20/08/1915 until 24/08/1915 when he received a gunshot wound to the hand. Re-joined the Battalion on the 04/10/1915 till he contracted Enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine) on the 22/10/1915. Invalided to the UK on the 04/12/1915. Draft for British Expeditionary Force on the 10/07/1916, Joined the "Hawke" Battalion on the 15/11/1916 till the time of his death. Robert's body was recovered post war and buried. Robert was reburied in Queens Cemetery (see photos). His grave inscription reads "A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE SAD TO RECALL."
