Alexander Shepherd

The Battalion arrived at Zeebrugge on the 07/10/1914 and were part of the 20th Brigade, 7th Division. Alexander originally joined the 3/4th Gordon Highlanders. He arrived in France in 29/09/1915 and was wounded in the July offensive in 1916. Alexander received his wounds during the Operations on the Ancre, 11th January - 13th March 1917 : The final flickering of the 1916 Somme offensive as British seek localised tactical advantage on heights above valley of the River Ancre. The Division were involved in the capture of Munich Trench, 10th -11th January. SEE PHOTOS x 14 FOR THE BATTALION WAR DIARY FEBRUARY - MARCH 1917. The War Diary for the day Alexander received his wound states - "Weather bad. Snow lying on ground. Shelling heavy. Casualties one killed and eight wounded". Alexander was one of the eight. Alexander shares a grave with Private L Maud of the West Yorkshire Regiment. Alexander is listed as 3rd BATTALION on the Coatbridge Memorial (he was originally in the 3/4th and 1st Battalions). He was educated at Lyne of Skene School and was a member of Skene Parish Church. Alexander is also remembered on the Skene War Memorial (see photos).
