Additional Information

Thomas and the Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 11/07/1915 and were part of the 46th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division. The 12th (Service) Battalion were in the Loos salient in March 1916. Loos was a hot section even during so called 'Quiet' periods with casualties from shell fire and sniper fire. It was now noticed that the enemy was using a new and heavier type of trench-mortar. Those of the British were unable to deal effectively with them. A very much better gun (the "Stokes") had been promised, but it did not appear until April, and for the remainder of the tour the Division were practically powerless to stop the enemy's trench-mortar activity. Thomas is also remembered in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) Roll of Honour. Thomas was reburied in Dud Corner Cemetery (see photos). See photos for Thomas' Medal Index Card, his Army Register of Soldiers Effects, his Service Medal and Award Rolls x 2, his CWGC Grave Registration x 2, his Headstone Report, Dud Corner Cemetery, Thomas' Pension Record and the Highland Light Infantry Cap Badge.
