Joseph Paterson

The Battalion were part of the 2nd Royal Naval Brigade, 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. Joseph was 3 times invalided back to the UK, twice with fever and once with influenza and after 3 and a half years finally fell just 6 weeks before the Armistice and just 1 week after re-joining his Battalion. Joseph's record states - Enlisted 30/03/15, Draft for Mediterranean Expeditionary Force 16/02/16. Joined Hood Battalion 28/02/16 till 21/10/16, Invalided to UK (fever). Draft for British Expeditionary Force 27/02/1917. Joined Hood Battalion 22/03/17 till 18/05/1917, Invalided to UK (fever). Draft for British Expeditionary Force 28/12/17. Joined Hood Battalion 05/01/18 till 28/06/1918. Invalided to UK (influenza) re-joined Hood Battalion 22/09/1918. Joseph was Killed in Action at the Battle of the Canal du Nord, 27th September - 1st October 1918. This was part of the Battles of the Hindenburg Line, 12th September - 12th October 1918 : A series of very large scale offensive operations that advance to and break the Hindenburg Line system. Carried out by the First, Third and Fourth Armies these victories rank among the greatest-ever British military achievements. The German Army fights on but it is increasingly clear that their ability to do so is declining fast. Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and United States Divisions all play key parts.
