Gavin died of acute pneumonia at Armstrong College, 1st Northern General Hospital, whilst under training for the front. He enlisted in the Black Watch but was transferred to the Royal Scots Fusiliers as 2nd Lieutenant. His body was taken from the Hospital to Newcastle Train Station accompanied by his comrades and arrived at his home in Blairpark for burial in Old Monkland Cemetery.
