Thomas and the Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 09/07/1915 and were part of the 45th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division. He fell when the Battalion were preparing for the Battle of Loos just over 1 month after he arrived in France. Thomas previously worked as a shoemaker in the Coatbridge Co-Op Society. He had also worked in the Rosyth Naval Base and was well known in junior football circles. He had been at the front for 8 months and was looking forward to a short furlough.
