Andrew Murphy

The Battalion were part of the 1st Brigade, Royal Naval Division when Andrew fell. In 1915 after a lengthy period of refit and training (scattered in various locations, and still short of many of the units that ordinarily made up the establishment of a Division), the Division moved to Egypt preparatory to the Gallipoli campaign. Andrew was shot through the throat at about 8pm on the 07/12/1915 whilst working on Sap (trench) N at Gallipoli. Andrew enlisted on the 05/01/1915, Draft for Mediterranean Expeditionary Force - 01/08/1915, joined Hood Battalion 20/08/1915 - 25/10/1915, ill with jaundice till he re-joined the Battalion on the 02/12/1915. Recorded in the Diary of Sub Lieutenant J.C. Hilton, 4th Platoon "D" Company, Hood Battalion:- 7/12/15 "About 8pm one of my platoon, a man called Murphy, was killed whilst working in Sap N." ; Born 04/8/1893. An Iron Worker. Son of Andrew and Catherine Murphy, of 5 Whittington Street, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Resided with father. Andrew is also remembered on the St. Patrick's Church Roll of Honour (see photos).
