Henry (Harry) McVey

The Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 14/08/1914 and were part of the 5th Brigade, 2nd Division. Henry arrived in France on the 12/09/1914. Henry was Killed in Action in the trenches on the Ypres-Menin Road when heavy shelling killed 1 Officer and 14 other men. Henry was one of these men. The Battalion took part in the Battle of Nonne Bosschen on the 11/11/1914. This was a phase in the The Battles of Ypres, 1914 (First Ypres), 19th October - 22nd November 1914 :Often known as the First Battle of Ypres, this is a series of named battles that also form part of the outflanking encounter. It becomes a desperate epic fight east of the city of Ypres which finally results in stalemate and entrenched warfare. It takes place at the same time as the Battle of the Yser, fought nearby by the Belgian Army against the Germans, and the battles to the south at Messines, Armentieres and La Bassee. Henry is also remembered on the Gartsherrie Works and St. Patrick's Church Rolls of Honour (see photos) and also in the St. Patrick's Church (book) Roll of Honour.
