Died of Wounds on the 21/12/1916 at Mesopotamia

In August 1914 the Battalion were in Bareilly, India. Part of the Bareilly Brigade in Meerut Division. On the 21/09/1914 they moved to France, arriving at Marseilles on the 12/10/1914. On the 26/09/1915 they amalgamated after heavy casualties with 1/4th Battalion, which resumed its former identity in November 1915. In December 1915 they moved to Mesopotamia, landing at Basra on the 31/12/1915. Formation was by now renamed 21st Brigade, 7th Indian Division. Hugh arrived in France on the 12/12/1914. Amara War Cemetery contains 4,621 burials of the First World War, more than 3,000 of which were brought into the cemetery after the Armistice. 925 of the graves are unidentified. In 1933, all of the headstones were removed from this Cemetery when it was discovered that salts in the soil were causing them to deteriorate. Instead a screen wall was erected with the names of those buried in the cemetery engraved upon it. Hugh is listed as McMULLAN on the Memorial. He is also remembered in the St Augustine's Parish (book) Roll of Honour.
