John had 4 sisters, Jane L McGibbon (1902 - 02/06/1943), Mary Murray McGibbon (1904 - 25/02/1976), Elizabeth (Bessie) Simpson McGibbon ( /02/1905 - 11/11/1905) and Euphemia (Effie) Simpson McGibbon (1912 - 08/10/1982). John's Pension was awarded to his mother Mary.

John was accidentally killed when his plane nose dived and crashed at Soham, Norfolk. See Newspaper clipping for letter to John's parents from his Instructing Officer describing the accident. 4 brother Officers attended his funeral on the 15/08/1918 and a plane flew slowly overhead. The RAF was formed in 1918 from the merging of the Army's Royal Flying Corps with the Navy's Royal Naval Air Service. John joined the Royal Flying Corps on the 01/10/1917 then the Royal Air Force on the 01/04/1918. I personally laid a Poppy at John's grave on the 27/03/2022 (Mother's Day). He is also remembered on the Gartsherrie Church and Coatbridge High School Rolls of Honour (see photos).
