Family Information

Son of the late William and Mary Martin of 161 Whifflet St, Coatbridge. Hugh's father died and his mother remarried Mr Daniel Downie. Hugh had 3 older brothers and an older and younger sister. In January 1919 Hugh's mother wrote a forceful letter to the Army asking for official notification of Hugh's death. On the 27/02/1922 she acknowledged receipt of Hugh's War and Victory Medals. From the 1901 Census - Address - 21 Summerlee St, Coatbridge - Mary Martin aged 33, Peter Martin aged 14, William Martin aged 11, Jane Martin aged 10, John Martin aged 8, Hugh Martin aged 6, Mary E Martin aged 1. Hugh's Pension was awarded to his mother Mary of 159a Whifflet St, Coatbridge on the 14/08/1919. After she died it went to Hugh's stepfather Daniel Downie of 13 Drumpellier Crescent, Coatbridge.

Additional Information

The 413th Field Company were part of the 52nd (Lowland) Division from March 1915. Hugh arrived in Egypt on the 22/06/1915. Hugh was twice wounded before being taken prisoner in May 1916 at Damascus. On the second occasion he was shot through the ear and the bullet exited his jaw. This occurred on the 23/10/1915 (see Newspaper clipping sent by Hugh to his mother from hospital). Hugh was reported missing in May 1916 and was subsequently reported as being taken prisoner. He stayed a prisoner until his death from influenza over 2 years later. Hugh was previously buried in Yozgad Military Cemetery and reburied in Baghdad War Cemetery (see photos x 2).
