George Lindsay

George's father also George was a Miner with the Summerlee & Mossend Iron & Steel Co Ltd and was employed in Colliery Drumpellier Nos. 3 & 4. He died on the 05/04/1899 at Alexander Hospital due to burns on his face, hands and body. This is how his death was described - Apparently gas had accumulated in an unventilated place near where he was working and a fall of roof forced it out when it was ignited by his naked light. George's Pension was awarded to his wife Catherine of 7 Wellwynd St, Airdrie then 1 Rutherford Lane, Glenfield St, Glasgow on the 18/08/1919. George and the 12th (Service) Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders arrived at Boulogne on the 19/09/1915. When George fell the 7th (Service) Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment were part of the 50th Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division. George was Killed in Action at a time when the German Army was in retreat.He fell at the Battle of Epehy on the 18/09/1918. This was part of the Battles of the Hindenburg Line, 12th September - 12th October 1918 : A series of very large scale offensive operations that advance to and break the Hindenburg Line system. Carried out by the First, Third and Fourth Armies these victories rank among the greatest-ever British military achievements. The German Army fights on but it is increasingly clear that their ability to do so is declining fast. Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and United States Divisions all play key parts. George is listed as 12th BATTALION ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS on the Coatbridge Memorial. This was his former Battalion. His Service Number was S/7302. He originally enlisted in the 3rd Battalion Highland Light Infantry (8121) at Hamilton on the 18/01/1914 (see Service Records x 5 and Service Records x 7 for his surviving younger brother Charles).
