William Jack

William arrived in France on the 24/07/1915. The 82nd Brigade were part of the 18th (Eastern) Division. The Division fought in the Battle of the Selle, 20th - 26th October 1918 which was part of the Final Advance in Picardy, 17th October - 11th November 1918 : The hardest-fought of the final offensive actions. First, Third and Fourth Armies exploited their success in breaking the Hindenburg Line by pushing on across the Rivers Selle and Sambre, recapturing Valenciennes and finally in liberating Mons, where it had all begun for the British Expeditionary Force more than four years before. William Died of Wounds at the 5th Northern General Hospital, Leicester just 2 weeks before the Armistice. In all the 18th (Eastern) Division had suffered the loss of 46,503 Killed, Wounded and Missing, of whom 13,727 Died and are listed in the Divisional Roll of Honour held at St. James’s Church in Colchester. William is also remembered on the Dundyvan Parish Church Roll of Honour and the Drumpellier Cricket Club Roll of Honour (see photos Newspaper clippings). He is also remembered in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) Roll of Honour.
