James C Hood / Campbell

The Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 14/08/1914 and were part of the 8th Brigade, 3rd Division when James died. James arrived in France on the 11/11/1914. On the 12/09/1914 the Battalion left the Division and moved to Army Troops, after taking heavy casualties at Le Cateau. They returned to 8th Brigade on the 30/09/1914. The Battalion took part in the First Attack on Bellewaarde (16th June) and the Actions of Hooge (19th July). James received a shrapnel wound to his scrotum on the 22/07/1915 (see Service Record 11 for full description). His Service Record (17) states he was admitted to the 1st Scottish General Hospital on the 06/10/1915 and DIED SUDDENLY at 5.30 a.m. on the 09/10/1915 from this old shrapnel wound to the scrotum. ADDED INFORMATION : Enlisted 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders. 11th June 1904 deserted. 15th August 1914 re-enlisted. Sent to France where he received a gunshot wound to the left testicle. Repatriated to service in Aberdeen Harbour until his death. The 1st Scottish General Hospital (Oldmill Military Hospital) became a Military Hospital in May 1915. The Hospital received wounded soldiers from the front, and smaller Hospitals in the area acted as auxiliary Hospitals for the 1st Scottish. James is listed as CAMPBELL with the CWGC. This could be the "C" middle name. James is listed as CAMPBELL or HOOD on most of his information. James' WW1 Pension Records state both CAMPBELL and HOOD as aliases. The first Pension Record states all children's surname as HOOD. Both surnames can be seen on his Army Register of Soldiers Effects and Service Records 5, 6, 10, 13 and 15. James is listed on the Coatbridge Memorial and the Reverend Samuel Lindsay's 1919 book as James C Hood. He is also remembered in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) Roll of Honour.
