The Battalion were in Lucknow, India in August 1914. They returned to England, landing at Plymouth on the 28/12/1914. They then sailed from Avonmouth on the 18/03/1915 and landed at Cape Helles on Gallipoli on the 25/04/1915. Thomas arrived in Egypt on the 16/11/1914. The Battalion were part of the 87th Brigade, 29th Division. Thomas Died in Malta from Wounds received on the 04/07/1915 at Gully Ravine in Gallipoli. The 1st Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers War Diary states : "WAR DIARY JULY 1915 - GULLY RAVINE 1st July 1915. "C" and "D" Companies employed in clearing the gully and burning the enemy's dead. "A" and "B" in improving H 11. 20:00pm. "C" and "D" moved in up in relief of "A" and "B" Companies. The latter Companies returning to the reserve trench vacated by "C" and "D". 21:00pm. Orders received to stand to owing to report stating that the enemy was moving in front of our left flank. Three Officers of Kitchener's Army joined the Battalion for duty. GULLY RAVINE 2nd July 1915. 14:30pm. Fatigues. "A" and "B" Companies burning the enemy's dead. "C" and "D" Companies improving the trenches. "A" and "B" Companies moved into the firing line to take up a position of left of 2nd Battalion SOUTH WALES BORDERERS to sap forward to J 12 and connect up with the sap From J 12. 4 Kitchener's Army Officers joined for duty. GULLY RAVINE 3rd July 1915. "C" and "D" Companies cleared the Gully and improved trenches. 17:00pm. "C" and "D" Companies relieved "A" and "B" Companies in the firing line. "A" and "B" returned to the support trenches. The Companies in the firing line continued working at the trench to J 12 day and night. GULLY RAVINE 4th July 1915. "A" and "B" Companies on fatigue in the gully. 17:00pm. "A" and "B" Companies relieved "C" and "D". "C" and "D" Companies returned to the support trenches. While in the fire trench "A" and "B" joined up the trench with that from J 12. GULLY RAVINE 5th July 1915. Companies in fire trench continued to improve the sap. 17:00pm. "C" and "D" Companies relieved "A" and "B". 1 Officer wounded. 20:00pm. One Platoon and machine-gun of 1/5th Battalion ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS (TF) were attached to our companies in the fire trench for the night". Thomas is listed as HIND on the 1901 Census and Trinity Parish Church, HYNDE on his Grave in Pieta Military Cemetery and HYND on his Medal Index Card, Army Register of Soldiers Effects, Service Medal and Award Rolls, CWGC and his Pension Record.
