Died on the 04/05/1917 of inflammation of the liver in Kamptee Hospital, India

William was formerly with the 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry (19444) and arrived in France on the 01/06/1915. The Battalion were part of the Sirhind Brigade, 3rd (Lahore) Division at that time. The 1st Garrison Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) were formed in Hamilton in February 1916 and moved to India in the same month, where it remained. William died of inflammation of the liver in Kamptee Hospital, India on the 04/05/1917. His mother Christina got a telegram from Captain Laurie telling her of her son's death. William is also remembered on the Maxwell Parish Church, East United Free Church, Sun Foundry and Stewarts and Lloyds Rolls of Honour (see photos x 2). William is buried in Kamptee Cemetery but is also on the Kirkee Memorial. The Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial was built to commemorate more than 1800 servicemen and women who died in India during the First World War, who were buried in civil and cantonment cemeteries in India and Pakistan whose graves were considered to be unmaintainable after India gained its Independence in 1947. The CWGC has been working to reinstate the original graves of a large number of these individuals and to date, the official commemoration of over 1000 individuals have been reverted back to their original burial location. However, their names will remain on the Kirkee 1914-1918 Memorial for the foreseeable future.
