George Sinclair Henderson

George's Trench Mortar Battery were part of the Divisional Artillery, 37th Division. He arrived in France on the 29/07/1915. George was killed instantaneously when a shell burst quite close to him. From "X" 37th Trench Mortar Battery Diary, 6th - 14th September 1916: "X, Y, Z, 37th Trench Mortar Battery fire 1290 bombs at enemy front line wire at points S.15.a.1.2, S15.c.3.6, S14.d.6.5, S15.c.4.7, S15.c.2.7, the wire was completely cut at three points and enemy front line trenches untenable". The locations are mostly South of Momber Crater on Vimy Ridge (one seems to be behind the British front line). These are pretty much where Petit Vimy Cemetery is now. The Batteries were in support of the 9th (Scottish) Division at the time and they were softening up the Germans prior to a trench raid by 8th Black Watch and 5th Camerons. Under casualties : "14/09/1916 No. 82183 Bombardier G. Simmons and 57510 Gunner G. Henderson killed by direct hit on emplacement by 5.9 shell". George's wife received a letter from Chaplain Oswald Milligan who conducted George's funeral (see Newspaper clipping). George is also remembered on the St. Patrick's Church and in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) Rolls of Honour.
