Killed in Action 16/05/1915 near Zillebeke

The Royal Scots : the senior line Infantry Regiment of the British Army, it is often referred to as "Pontius Pilate's Bodyguard". The 2nd Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 14/08/1914 and were part of the 8th Brigade, 3rd Division throughout the war. The Division was selected to advance into Germany as part of the Occupation Force. David arrived in France on the 23/10/1914. He was Killed in Action on the 16/05/1915. The 2nd Battalion War Diary states - "16th May 1915 : Enemy active with Trench Mortars but very little sniping. Further consolidated our position. Casualties : 2 Killed, 2 Wounded". He was reburied in the Divisional Collecting Post Cemetery and Extension (see photos). Between 1924 and 1926, the original Cemetery was considerably enlarged when graves were brought in from the surrounding Battlefields and some small burial grounds in the area. In all, 88 Commonwealth casualties of the First World War are now buried or commemorated in the Cemetery. There is also one German war grave. The EXTENSION is made up of Rows F to S of Plot I and all of Plot II, a total of 676 Commonwealth burials. Of these, 511 are unidentified.
