Thomas made a Will leaving all his property and effects to his wife. From the 1901 Census - Address - 111 Copland St, Urr, Dalbeattie - Robert Green aged 44, Joan Green aged 43, Thomas Green aged 15, Mary A Green aged 12, Janet Green aged 11, James Green aged 10, William Green aged 7, Charles Green aged 7, Isabella Green aged 9 months, Henrietta Green aged 7 months. Thomas' Pension was awarded to his wife Mary on the 16/05/1916. His 3 children were also listed. His wife Mary married Stoker Andrew Dingwall (224794) H.M.S. Verdun on the 14/03/1918.

The Battalion arrived at Boulogne on the 14/08/1914 and were part of the 8th Brigade, 3rd Division. Thomas arrived in France on the 15/06/1915. The Battle of Loos would take place mainly from the 25th - 30th September 1915, but extended to the 14th October, and the Second Battle of Bellewaarde Ridge, or of Bellewaarde Farm, on the 25/09/1915, was a disastrous diversionary attack launched to distract German attention from the Battle of Loos. The Battalion relieved the 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment at the HOOGE trenches. Relief was completed by 2.15 a.m. on the 24/09/1915. The objective of the attack carried out on the 25/09/1915 by 3rd and 14th Divisions was to contain the enemy opposite HOOGE and prevent his sending reinforcements to assist his forces further south in their efforts to withstand the main attack to be made by the French and our 1st Army. The attack of the 3rd Division was carried out by the Royal Scots Fusiliers (9th Brigade) on the right flank and the following Battalions in order from that flank : 2nd Battalion Royal Scots, 4th Gordon Highlanders, 1st Gordon Highlanders, 2nd South Lancashire Regiment and the Royal Irish Rifles. The two last named Battalions belonged to 7th Brigade. To the north of BELLEWAARDE LAKE the attack was made by the 14th Division. "C" Company - 2 Officers, 9 Other Ranks Killed, 2 Officers, 50 Other Ranks Wounded, 1 Other Rank Wounded and Missing, 2 Officers, 1 Other Rank Missing Believed Killed, 3 Other Ranks Missing. "D" Company - 2 Officers, 9 Other Ranks Killed, 3 Officers, 48 Other Ranks Wounded, 1 Officer, 18 Other Ranks Wounded and Missing, 11 Other Ranks Missing Believed Killed. Total 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders Casualties 25/09/1915 - 17 Officers, 326 Other Ranks = 343 (see War Diary 31). Thomas is possibly remembered on the Dalbeattie War Memorial.
