The 4th (Extra Reserve) Battalion Highland Light Infantry : August 1914 at Hamilton. A depot / training unit, it moved on mobilisation to Plymouth. Moved in May 1915 to Haddington, going on to Hawick in early 1917. James died of heart failure on 04/06/1917 in a War Hospital in Hawick within 1 week of enlistment. He is also remembered in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) Roll of Honour.
