Bernard Fagan

Died of Wounds on the 13/04/1918 at the 4th Canadian Casualty Clearing Station. Wounds received at the Battle of Hazebrouck (part of the Battles of the Lys)

The Battalion arrived at Le Havre on the 14/08/1914 and were part of the 8th Brigade, 3rd Division when Bernard Died of Wounds during the German Spring Offensive. He received his wounds at the Battle of Hazebrouck when the Division fought in the defence of Hinges Ridge. This was part of the Battles of the Lys, 9th April - 29th April 1918 : The third German offensive Operation Georgette takes place in Flanders with the objective of capturing key railway and supply roads and cutting off British Second Army at Ypres. After initial successes the German attack is once again held after British and French reserves are somehow found and deployed. SEE PHOTOS x 22 FOR THE BATTALION WAR DIARY 11th APRIL - 14th APRIL 1918. The War Diary (12) states casualties from 11th - 14th April 1918 :" Officers Killed in Action 2 (2nd Lieut. W.H.B. Wolstencroft, 2nd Lieut. J.F. Logan), Died of Wounds 1 (2nd Lieut. H. Lambroughton), Wounded 3 (Acting Captain A. Petrie, Lieut. J. Briggs, 2nd Lieut. Fairhorne), Missing 1 (2nd Lieut. W. McMinn), Wounded and Missing 1 (2nd Lieut. W. How). Other Ranks Killed in Action 8, Wounded 168, Missing 150, Wounded and Missing 15". War Diary (22) states casualties of Other Ranks as Killed in Action 8, Wounded 166, Missing 149. Bernard was well known in the St. Augustine's Parish and was Secretary to the Boys Guild. He is also remembered on the Stewarts and Lloyds Roll of Honour and in the St. Augustine's Parish (book) Roll of Honour (see photos).
