Archibald (Archie) Ewing

Killed in Action on the 06/05/1916 at the Hohenzollern Sector near Loos

Archibald and the Battalion arrived in France on the 28/07/1915 and were part of the 27th Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division. Archibald was appointed Lance Corporal in the field on the 27/04/1915. The 15th (Scottish) Division landed in France 7th - 13th July 1915. The Division served with distinction on the Western Front for the remainder of the war, taking part in most of the significant actions and winning regard by the enemy as one of the most formidable in the British army. The Battalion War Diary states - "Sailly Labourse 03/05/1916 at 8 a.m : Battalion proceeded to trenches to relieve 7th K.O.S.B. in the Right Subsection of the HOHENZOLLERN SECTOR. Companies were distributed in the line as follows : In Firing and Support Lines (from right to left) "C", "D", "A", In Reserve "B" Company. Trenches 12.30 p.m : Relief completed. Enemy artillery and minenwerfer fairly active against our firing and support lines. Casualties - Officers 0, Other Ranks 8 Wounded". "Trenches 06/05/1916 at 4.30 p.m : Enemy retaliation very heavy, Considerable damage done to our trenches especially on our support line held by left (A) Coy and on Communication trenches. 5.30 p.m : Situation normal. Casualties - 2nd LT J. CRABBE wounded, Other Ranks Killed 2, Wounded 8". Archibald is listed as 4th BATTALION on the Coatbridge Memorial.
